You may remember a feature we did a while back on cacti. We spent a day celebrating the great spirit, Peyote. Growing up out of the desert as humble green buttons, peyote has been used as sacrament by native peoples for over 5,000 years. In the 19th century, Native Americans in the United States began turning to peyote to deepen their spirituality. Often referred to as “sacred medicine,” peyote has god-like status for many peoples of the Americas. Despite its modest round appearance, the peyote cactus can offer profound insight. But over the past few years, it has plummeted to rapid decline. This week, we’re going to talk about the threats to this incredible plant, and what you can do to help save it.
