As with so many conservational issues, it’s important to first acknowledge the inextricable connection between us as humans, and the environment we depend upon for life. Indigenous author Robin Wall Kimmerer says it so well: “Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.”

The debate about how peyote should be taken and by who touches on some deep and complicated debates, but the most important thing is for this great spirit to be returned to the hands of indigenous peoples and their ancient wisdom around land management.
