An enduring and incredible part of Cyrus the Great’s legacy is an object called the Cyrus Cylinder. The Cyrus Cylinder is a clay cylinder with inscriptions about Cyrus the Great’s rule printed on it. The writing on the cylinder includes references to religious sanctuaries and to protection of deported peoples. Because of this, scholars say that the Cyrus Cylinder is an early example of religious tolerance in a diverse country. The Cyrus Cylinder is from the 6th century BCE. Maybe the foundations of our unity are older than we think.
