Peyote

Peyote

The second great desert spirit we want to celebrate is the peyote cactus. Growing up out of the desert as humble green buttons, peyote has been used as sacrament by native peoples for over 5,000 years. In the 19th century, Native Americans in the United States began turning to peyote to deepen their spirituality. This cactus has been referred to as “the sacred medicine.” To the Huichol people, a group of indigenous Americans, peyote (known as Hikuri) is a primary deity. Despite this modest round appearance, the peyote cactus offers profound insight. It truly is a great spirit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
