The world of the ancient Athenians was animated by mysterious and magical forces. What we now know as Athens, Greece, was once an ancient civilization buzzing with gods, curses, souls, and spirits.
To the ancient Athenians, the land was not an inanimate backdrop, but rather a goddess who gave birth to the first Athenians. Humans lived within nature, were of nature. She took care of them, and they took care of her. The pace of life was dictated by the rhythms of the seasons and the lifecycles of crops and animals. Individuality hadn’t been invented yet, but Athens is the birthplace of democracy. People were inseparable from their community, and families lived together.
The Athenians were great spirits who lived by a model of reality that put myth and nature at its core. Today, we honor and learn from them.
